Micham House by The Collaborative
Collaborative the latest project is their own architect home design. The Micham House is a 2,850-square-foot home designed for rather large families. Located in a pristine place in Sylvania, Ohio, surrounded by natural scenery, offers sublime views from every part of the house. In addition, there is plenty of space for outdoor activities, including a backyard swimming pool.
This project is the Architect’s private home. Serving families with 6 children with 4 children still at home, a balance needs to be reached between current and future space needs. The giver’s main form is the desire to capture panoramic views of the river on the deep-hung window wall which will allow passive heating in winter but prevent sunlight in summer. The organization of interior spaces allows the main room (living room, dining room & kitchen) to take advantage of this view.
The facade organization facing the street presents a modest entrance in a protected niche. A road to the left allows visitors to come and go to the terrace / pool area without having to go through the house. The pool area is raised above the surrounding class so that the retaining wall becomes a security barrier – thus eliminating the need for a fence which would otherwise block view of the river. The weathering steel planter box also serves this safety function.
Very active family lifestyle. Indoor and outdoor social activities take place throughout the year. Shade, pool and fire table elements have features that support use through seasonal temperature cycles. Openness through the window wall allows activities that can divide groups but still feel connected.
